The end of the year is near, and it’s time to look back. 2022 was an exciting year for me. We just came out of a Covid pandemic, a period that made us work from home and kept us inside to keep covid under control. At the start of 2022, My Family, friends, and I went on a holiday to Egypt. We left on the first of January, which isn’t the best time to travel when you partied on new years eve 😊. While enjoying the sun and relaxing, I overthought my current career and talked with my wife and friends about my dream to start my own business. When we returned from Egypt, I decided it was now or never to start my own business. After resigning from my current employer, I started as a Freelance EUC Consultant at New Yard beginning the first of April, and no, that wasn’t an April fool’s joke.
Leaving my trusted environment and jumping into the unknown was something I looked up to. Luckily, I have met some great guys willing to help me get started. They helped me get my first project, and I’m thankful for that. It’s an exciting project where I’ve learned much about Azure DevOps and PowerShell combined with my passion for Citrix. Starting as a Freelance EUC Consultant, it became clear this was the right choice I’d made. It may sound cliché, but if I knew it was this exciting, I wondered why I didn’t start earlier. Everyone I spoke to this year says the same: once you start as a freelancer, you don’t want to go back and work for a boss.
In the EUC market, there were also some changes. Citrix was acquired by Tibco (Vista Equity Partners and Evergreen Coast Capital), and VMWare was acquired by Broadcom. For Citrix, there were some layoffs, and great people left the company. But some changes within Citrix were needed. They changed some names back to the ones everybody knows. Citrix Hypervisor is called XenServer again, Citrix ADC is called NetScaler again, and even they recovered Citrix Endpoint Management which was deprecated. There was a call between the Product Managers and the CTPs. The CTPs were all excited about the future of Citrix. Looking at VMWare, the merger isn’t approved yet, as the EU is looking into this.
Back to me, as mentioned before, I started as a Freelance EUC Consultant. One-off the positive benefits (and believe me, there are a lot of benefits) of being a Freelancer is that you can make up your own agenda and choose which events you would like to attend. The downside is that you need to pay it yourself 😊. For the first time I’ve gone to E2EVC, it was a fantastic event and something I’m looking forward to next year. For now, I’m going to enjoy Christmas with family and friends. Between Christmas and the end of the year, I need to do some work, but it’s mostly wrapping up some things. I’m looking forward to 2023, when I keep developing my business and skills, going back to E2EVC in Rome and maybe some other events, and enjoying life with family and friends.
